John Read: Falling in Love with the Generosity of God

Today’s guest is the CEO of Heritage Ministry Solutions, John Read. 35 years ago, he met Christ through a wonderful woman named Patty who he was dating at the time. Patty is now his wife and she was the one who introduced him to Christ. After she introduced him to Christ, he began to read the Bible starting from Genesis 1:1.That was when he read about Tithe. Patty explained to him that this is the practice of giving 10% of what we receive back to God. So that very next Sunday, he wrote a check for his 10% to give to the church. He has been a Christian for about 35 years now and he has learned a lot. He has learned that properly applied stewardship becomes generosity. Writing a check for 10% is easy but then he realized that God wants so much more than that. We have a God who gave it all and he started to think how he didn’t know how to give it all. And John loves Him for His generosity.That started him in the path of stewardship. What we give to Him is not a gift but it is the practice of us returning what we have loaned from Him like how a father loans his car to his child for a while. We’re not the owners, He is the proprietor so we are returning the Tithe to Him.John didn’t just want to be obedient, he wanted to be a blessing to the Lord. He wanted to go beyond so that God and spending a lot of time in churches made him understand that we are a stewardship organization. He realized that what we return to God was an investment. We give to Him and he gives back to us with interest. It doesn’t just end with money and he started to invest more than the 10% that was written in the Bible but more. He gave more because he trusted God. He gave more than money because the economy of Heaven isn’t money, it’s the people. So he gave more and the return he got was the lighted hearts of people and making a difference in the kingdom.He loved it. He fell in love and continued going even when he started to no longer be satisfied. Instead of stopping, he prayed with Patty to God to show what this meant. And God answered by guiding him towards the Crown Financial Ministries and he joined the stewardship. God guided him through his entire journey from Crown Financial Ministries to becoming a staff of a Christian Church in Atlanta, Georgia where he continued to serve in a neat stewardship, discipleship, administrative type of role. It was during that time that God challenged him into creating the Heritage Ministry Solution where they train churches to manage God’s money to amplify its effectiveness among their congregations and among the kingdom itself. They got a lot of clients and it might look like accountancy but they also provided a discipleship and stewardship, coaching, financial training, and overall financial consulting.Heritage Ministry Solution has been in business for about 15 years now and John is loving every minute of what they do. And it all started that one day that John read about that 10%. Finding Freedom in Christ - Excerpts of an Interview with Rob Lohman for Addiction, Freedom & Faith Podcast

Pastor Kevin and Rob talked about how people found freedom in Christ in this episode. Like Becky who used to be an exotic dancer. She has already gone three times with GHI to India and Pastor Kevin watched her transform. She was a support member and brought great value to the team and a great blessing to the people that she was put in front of but Pastor Kevin saw how she had become a leader by her third trip. Becky understood the women in the red light district and they helped heal each other and give each other hope and understanding. There was also David who struggled with chemical addictions and he went into a rehabilitation program. He came really sober and dry for the first time in his adult life. Within two weeks on a mission trip in a high school, he took courage and made himself vulnerable. He told his story and people resonated with him and this allowed the Holy Spirit to minister to these teenagers and young adults. David found a higher purpose for living and a means to escape and go another year of being sober. He is still doing great today. They both found freedom and peace through Jesus Christ.The same way can be said to Pastor Kevin during such a painful moment in his life where he has lost his church because he was a workaholic who believed his relationship with God was based on how well he performed in the church. He was bound by anger and pain, by loss and the feeling of simply drifting away, not knowing what to do with his life. It was his wife that helped him start to move again, being understanding and forgiving him. Together they went to a workshop where they presented the seven steps to freedom and the third step was the process of biblical forgiveness. People supported him to biblically forgive people the way God forgave us. To forgive 40 people with the 3 most impactful ones being himself, his father and false expectation. He forgave his father for screaming at him as a small child “you’ll never amount to anything”. He forgave himself for things he felt so guilty and shameful for. He released God from false expectations. After that, it was simply easy to forgive the 37 people in the church that terminated him.He went into that workshop a pain-stricken hurt angry loss man and came out free because of biblical forgiveness. Transformational Loss - Excerpts of an Interview with Markus Watson

In Markus Watson’s interview with Pastor Kevin, they talk about Pastor Kevin’s experience with loss. Even from an early age, Pastor Kevin has lived a life full of pain and loss. He was an insecure child who was being bullied and his parent’s failed marriage and divorce had a huge impact in his life. His eyes were opened when he heard God’s message in high school. Ever since that day, he had wanted to use his life in service to God, giving his heart to the Lord.But he didn’t quite understand what God wanted from him. His relationship with God back then was performance based and he was a severe workaholic. His 50 work hours a week became 60 then became a very worrying 70. He nearly destroyed his marriage and their family, and almost killed himself by working so hard all in the name of the ministry. His worrying workaholic practices were the reason why he was let go from the church that he worked so hard for. It was a painful moment for him but it was also that experience that finally made him understand that all God ever wanted was time with him. All he really wanted for him was to pursue His presence and that became his ministry, his purpose. He found this during his time in India and that is when he was invited by a group of counselors that ministers to pastors in his area. One of the men left the church and they fell into financial hardships. They couldn’t pay for any of their bills. They had no money but it was also the time when he felt really free to pursue the presence of God so he did.The need for food grew into something more: to share with others the presence of God. For they may need food but, at least, they knew the Lord Jesus. What about the others? His heart broke and he began to pray for God to give them food, not for them but so others might eat. That was when God provided, guiding him towards the products supermarkets would simply throw away and, before he knew it, the supermarket had given them donations they could use. They filled their refrigerators and cabinets and he realized that if they hoard it, it goes away, but if they give it away, it comes right back. The next day it happened again and again. Within a year, they were sharing food with over 500 families in a month.His loss made him a better person, made him a better child of God. David’s Story - Culture of Generosity

David worked with Hunter at St. Ministry in Birmingham for years where they would go ride in a truck to pick up donations together. He became a father figure for Hunter and showed him what a man of Christ is. Hunter's relationship with David is one of discipleship and action. When he and his wife heard God's call for them, they quit their stable job for 10 years and took their three children with them to do what God commanded, placing their faith and trust that God will provide them with whatever they would need. When they got to the seminary, they didn't have  a job for a little while but they were lucky enough to have a little bit of savings to help them for the next three months. But the savings didn't last, enough though they had a roof over their heads, they were running out of the finances that they had in the bank.But God did not forget them. One day, David received a knock on their door and a lady was outside, telling him that she wasn't sure why she was here, only that she was sure God told her to come here and give David the trunk full of groceries she had in her car. She didn't know why, all she knew was that God had been guiding her since she was in the grocery store to buy twice than she was supposed to and to give that extra grocery to David and his family.God had answered their prayers in such a wonderful way. They don't know her name nor did she even stay, only giving them the grocery God has guided her to buy before leaving. God gave David and his family more than enough and they know exactly what to do. They are empowered to become generous and to become givers.God empowers generosity all around us and it is that generosity that we give to others. They, in turn, divide that generosity and give that to those around them, creating a cycle of generosity.A culture of generosity.That is what we long for in the church. We long for more people to live with such abandonment and a spirit of generosity because we will never know a more cheerful giver than our Almighty God. As long as we trust and have faith in Him, he will provide for us. Commit in Advance to Give Away any Surplus

First of all, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you as you calculate everything you use your income to cover (housing utilities, medical, transportation, food, etc). Take your time to cover everything and ask yourself if your current income covers everything. If it doesn’t, start praying specifically for God to cover this just as it is said in Philippians 4:19.And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.If you already have surplus, calculate the amount of surplus you have and we encourage you to honor God with your surplus and watch what He does in and through your life. Determine in advance that you are going to honor God with what He puts into your hands and agree that everything you are and have belongs to God. Open your hands before God.Pray and commit in advance to give away any surplus for the advancement of the gospel and watch what happens.You must decide in your heart how much to give and don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure for God loves a person who gives cheerfully as read in 2 Corinthians 9:7.Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.When we live open handedly taken, these three action steps provide three benefits to you: living generously for God, setting others free to experience God’s unconditional love and acceptance, and giving more of God than you ever thought possible.Now nothing is limited from being the giver and the giving through you. Now God is free. You are free and others are free. Now your motives and intentions align with God’s motives and intentions. Exchange Your Needs for the Needs of Others

As more believers live out audacious generosity, we can see the great commission fulfilled. Setting others free is the key to living generously and the key to setting others free is inside all of us. Here are three specific applications that will empower you to live generously and set others free.The first of these three specific application is: Change Your Needs for Needs of Others.Be confident that God knows your needs and has committed to supply all your needs. With the confidence that God will meet your needs, you are free to consider the needs of others. This allows you to make the needs of others first and foremost in your life. Let Him exchange the concern for yourself with the concern for others.Once we realize that God has got our back, we are secure and there is an ever-present help in time of need. We know that everyone that calls upon the name of Jesus will be saved. Our needs will be met for God has our backs so we can focus on the needs of others, of those who have not yet heard of the Gospel and do not know that God loves them. Destination Audacious Generosity

“Direction, not intention determines your destination” is one of Pastor Kevin’s favorite quotes is from pastor Andy Stanley of North Point Church in Atlanta Georgia and Pastor Kevin talks about the destination of his book, Audacious Generosity in this episode with the focus on the conclusion.Audacious Generosity concludes in our destination of being empowered for limitless giving audacious generosity  by noting the three steps we worked through:First Step: We had to set God free by daily asking God for more and acknowledging that this will take a lifetime of courage and accepting God’s request to take courage.Second Step: We had to set ourselves free by winning three boxing matches that kept us from all generosity (Fear vs. Freedom, Working vs. Resting, and Reprimand vs. Reward).Third Step: We had to set others free by flipping the switch from getting more to giving more, from greed to generosity, and from burden to blessing.Now, we are free to live recklessly for God. We encourage everyone to wake up everyday to become more generous as God gives through you, living recklessly for God. Do not hesitate even if you feel it is absolutely reckless at times, do it anyway. God is so confident of his love and care for you that he will ask you to abandon everything for the sake of the call. Now, you know, this isn't a subtraction from his blessing to you but a multiplication of his blessing through you living recklessly for God empowers you for limitless giving. That is audacious generosity. And remember that God is guiding us toward becoming like Christ.Opening our hands before God is not just some mystical spiritual exercise but a calling that the living God of the universe is inviting us to join him in his work. God is the giver and giving depends upon what God puts into our hands.
